Most real estate investors don’t immediately think of their self-directed IRA as a source of capital for residential and commercial real estate purchases. However, self-directed individual retirement accounts allow investors to diversify their assets into investments other than stocks, bonds and mutual.

To start, account holders need to establish a relationship with a qualified trustee or custodian who will administer the assets. The trustee can advise on the transaction, the trust account, and their role as custodian. Keep in mind there are more risks with this strategy such as the lack of liquidity and the requirements to maintain the property. Meet with your fee-only advisor before you invest.
