| About a year before I retired I decided that I was going to build a model rail road after I retire. Well I retired and I haven't started the layout yet, life seems to get in the way of life. This RR is going to be a logging camp theme in upstate NY that started around 1860 and was working until the1930's. Anyway, I did start the RR with the creation on little people for the scenery. There is a story around it that I have added with the pictures of the little people. I would like to give thanks to Chris Walas for his book on Making Sculpey Figures on myLargescale.com web site.
My figures are in O scale, which is 1/4' = 1' for those who don't know model railroad scales. They are about 1 1/4" tall or short, depending how you look at it, which is 5' in scale. The first picture is a group shot of everyone to date. I included a quarter and a dime to show you how big they are. The diorama they are displayed on is of a saw pit, which is used to cut logs by hand into usable lumber. This is the first model for the logging camp as the story will tell how the camp evolves over time. I hope you enjoy the pictures and the story. |

| This is Tom, he owns the camp. Tom was a furinture maker in the Bronx and as good fortune would have it he inherited a large tract of land in upstate NY near Poughkeepsie. This land was 10 square miles of nothing but trees, but he saw it as a gold mine of lumber to build furniture. He found a clear spot of land and proceeded to build a saw pit. He hired a worker to help him cut lumber. Soon he realised he had no time to build his furniture, so he decided to open a logging camp. He hired more help and soon they were cutting boards for him. | ||||||||||||||||||||

| The workers lived in the camp, first in tents, then after enough lumber was produced, they set about and built a small cabin to live in. As with all places that have work, others arrived looking for a job. Carpenters weren't needed right away, but a blacksmith, thats a skill that is helpful, and one arrived with a helper. | ||||||||||||||||||||
